Measles Cases on the Rise: What You Need to Know
Measles is an airborne virus that is highly contagious, typically transmissible 4 days before the appearance of a rash until 4 days after the rash goes away. An infected person can spread it through breathing, coughing, or sneezing. Symptoms begin 10-14 days after exposure, usually beginning with runny nose, cough, red/watery eyes, and white spots inside the cheeks. A rash may start a little later on the face and upper neck, spreading over the entire body to feet, and fades after 3 days.
Complications can occur in anyone, but are more common in those under 5 years of age, over 30 years of age, or those who may be pregnant. Beyond the symptoms of the infection itself (which can be a mild rash to organ damage and death), an infection with measles causes significant overall immune memory loss, which lessens the body's protection against other infections for years to come.
Island Health recommends measles vaccination for the following:
- those born after January 1, 1970 are eligible for two doses (usually given during early childhood); check your vaccination record
- those born before January 1, 1970 are likely immune through prior infection or "herd" immunity; for those who have no history of measles infection may be eligible for one dose
- infants 6-12 months can receive an extra/early dose if travelling to an area with measles;
There are some exceptions to these guidelines. For ages 4 and up, our vaccinating pharmacists can help you determine what your needs and eligibility are. For children under 4, please contact your local health unit for assessment.
Vaccinations take about 7-10 days to start working. Vaccinate pre-emptively, before exposure.
